蒸馏法主要被用于特大型海水淡化处理上及热能丰富的地方。反渗透膜法适用面非常的广，且脱盐率很高，因此被广泛使用。反渗透膜法首先是将海水提取上来，进行初步处理，降低海水浊度，防止细菌、藻类等微生物的生长，然后用特种高压泵增压，使海水进入反渗透膜，由于海水含盐量高，因此海水反渗透膜必须具有高脱盐率，耐腐蚀、耐高压、抗污染等特点，经过反渗透膜处理后的海水，其含盐量大大降低，TDS含量从36000毫克/升降至200毫克/升左右。淡化后的水质甚至优于自来水，这样就可供工业、商业、居民及船舶、舰艇使用。
